Men's Golf in Third Going into Final Round of NCAA Southwest Regional

Junior Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.) shot three-under par 68 on Friday and the University of Florida men's golf team shot three-over par 287 in the second round of the NCAA Southwest Regional in Austin, Texas. The Gators are in third place after two rounds.

Florida has a 36-hole total of 580 (+12) and sits four shots behind Texas (576, +8), the tournament leader heading into Saturday's final round. Texas Tech is second at 10-over par 578.

"We actually got off to a pretty good start today," said head coach Buddy Alexander. "All five guys in the lineup were in the mix today, which has been rare for us this season."

Tyson Alexander made only one bogey in his round, on the third hole, and finished with four birdies in his final 10 holes. He has a two-round total of 143 (+1) and is tied for fifth. Fellow junior Tim McKenney (Scottsdale, Ariz.) improved his first round score by five strokes, carding even-par 71 in the second round. He is tied for 18th at five-over par 147.

Seniors Billy Horschel (Grant, Fla.) and Will Strickler (Charlottesville, Va.) matched each other for the second straight day, shooting three-over par 74's on Friday. The third senior in the lineup, Toby Ragland (Jacksonville, Fla.), also shot 74 (+3).

Horschel and Strickler are tied for 11th at four-over par 146 heading into the final round on Saturday, while Ragland is tied for 24th at six-over 148.

"We are in position to try and win the tournament tomorrow," said Coach Alexander. "If we put together a solid round, we have a very good shot."

Texas' Lance Lopez is the individual leader at five-under par 137. Lopez is the only player in the field to have two rounds under par for the tournament.

UF will tee off in the third round Saturday morning at 10:40 eastern time. Tee times could be changed due to the possibility of inclement weather. Live scoring is available online at www.golfstat.com. At the conclusion of the tournament, results will be posted online at www.gatorzone.com.
