Gators Ready to Make Mark at NCAA East Regional
Thursday, May 28, 2009 | Track and Field
The University of Florida track and field teams, fresh off a stellar performance at the 2009 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships, travel to Greensboro, N.C., this weekend to participate in the 2009 NCAA East Regional hosted by North Carolina A&T State University on Friday and Saturday at its Irwin Belk Track.
Two-day ticket passes are on sale for $18 for adults and $10 for senior citizens, while single-day tickets are available for $10 for adults and $7 for senior citizens. For complete ticket information, please call the North Carolina A&T Ticket Office at (336) 334-7749 or visit www.ncataggies.com.
The Gator men enter the NCAA regional meet ranked No. 1 in the nation in the latest United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll. They are coming off a runner-up finish at the SEC Outdoor Championships. Florida's women captured the 2009 SEC Outdoor Championship and enter the meet ranked No. 16 in the latest USTFCCCA poll.
In total, the Florida men's and women's teams won nine individual outdoor SEC Championships, claiming league crowns in the men's decathlon, women's steeplechase, women's long jump, women's triple jump, women's javelin, women's shot put, men's 4x100-meter relay, men's 200-meter dash and the men's 400-meter dash.
Junior sprinter Calvin Smith captured the 2009 men's Commissioner's Trophy, awarded to the league's high-points scorer at the outdoor championships. Smith finished with 22 total points, earning an SEC individual championship in the 400-meter dash, a runner-up finish in the 200-meter dash and he was also part of an SEC Champion 4x100-meter relay team and a third-place 4x400-meter relay team.
The Florida track and field teams have had a storied history at the NCAA East Regional since the regional format for outdoor track and field was instituted prior to the 2003 season. In the first two years of the regional format, Florida's men's and women's teams took home the East Regional title in both 2003 and 2004.
The Gator men have never finished lower than second at the event, with two first-place finishes and a quartet of runner-up finishes. The Florida women have twice won the East Regional and have finished third in each of the past two seasons.
The event, which has twice been hosted by the University of Florida at its Percy Beard Track at James G. Pressly Stadium, returns to Greensboro, N.C., for the second time in NCAA East Regional history.
Complete results and a recap of Florida's participation in the NCAA East Regional will be available at www.GatorZone.com.
