Wimbledon Run Ends for Jesse Levine; Lisa Raymond Continues Monday
Saturday, June 27, 2009 | Men's Tennis
Former University of Florida tennis star Jesse Levine had his magical Wimbledon run end in the third round of the gentlemen's singles draw on Saturday. Lisa Raymond will play during the second week of The Championships, as she continues her quest for another title in the mixed doubles draw.
Levine, who competed for the Gators during the 2007 season, dropped a hard-fought 5-7, 7-5, 6-3, 6-3 decision to Stanislas Wawrinka (SUI), the No. 19 seed in the event. The third-round showing is the best in a Grand Slam for Levine, who reached Wimbledon's second round last year, as well as the second round of the 2008 Australian Open to mark his previous best showings in a Grand Slam.
Raymond, who has nine Grand Slam doubles titles to her credit, will continue play at The All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club in the third round of the mixed doubles event. Raymond and her partner Marcin Matkowski (POL) are the No. 3 seed and face No. 15 seeded Lukas Dlouhy and Ivete Benesova (CZE) in the round of 16 late Monday.
During her stellar professional career, Raymond, the 1992 and 1993 NCAA Singles Champion, has won five Ladies' Doubles Grand Slam titles and four Mixed Doubles championships. Raymond captured the 2001 Ladies' and the 1999 Mixed Doubles Wimbledon titles. Last year, she reached the final of the Ladies' Wimbledon draw, but lost to the sister pair of Serena and Venus Williams in the title match.
Jill Craybas, the 1996 NCAA Singles Champion, had her Wimbledon experience come to a close, when she and her mixed doubles partner Jeff Coetzee dropped a hard-fought 4-6, 6-3, 15-13 first-round battle where the deciding set alone lasted 98 minutes.
