NCAA Leading 35 Gators Selected as CSCAA Scholar All-Americans
Monday, July 6, 2009 | Women's Swimming & Diving
A staggering 35 University of Florida swimmers and divers highlighted the College Swimming Coaches Association of America's (CSCAA) annual Scholar All-American awards. The CSCAA Scholar All-Americans are selected on the basis of their performance in both the pool and classroom. To be selected to the All-American team, swimmers must qualify for the NCAA Championship meet and achieve a GPA of 3.50 or higher. Honorable Mention selections must achieve an NCAA consideration time and a 3.50 GPA or higher.
With 471 first-team selections and an additional 430 honorable mentions, a record 901 individual certificates highlight the 2009 spring season.
The University of Florida led the nation with nineteen Scholar All-Americans and sixteen Honorable Mention honorees. Emory University placed seventeen swimmers on the first team while earning an additional nine honorable mentions while Kenyon College picked up fifteen selections and five honorable mentions.
In addition to its individual student-athlete accolades, both the Florida men's and women's swimming and diving squads were named Scholar All-American teams, with the Lady Gators posting a 3.31 cumulative GPA this spring. The UF men rallied for a cumulative 3.19 GPA in the classroom.
The CSCAA Scholar All-American honors highlight a Gator squad that saw rising senior Clark Burckle (Louisville, Ky.) garner ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Third-Team honors in June after being selected as a 2008-09 CoSIDA Academic All-District III Men's At-Large First-Team honoree.
Additionally from the women's side, five-time NCAA backstroke champion Gemma Spofforth (West Sussex, England) also represented the UF swimming and Diving program twice after earning ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III Women's At-Large Second-Team honors.
