Women's Tennis' Mather and Will Shine on Final Day at SEC Coaches Fall Classic
Monday, September 14, 2009 | Women's Tennis
University of Florida freshman Allie Will (Boca Raton, Fla.) captured the singles title of the top flight at the 2009 SEC Coaches Fall Classic hosted by Vanderbilt University at the Currey Tennis Center.
The Gator rookie took out Vanderbilt's 46th-ranked Catherine Newman, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0, in Sunday's championship match, as Will toppled three nationally-ranked opponents in as many days to take the tournament title in her collegiate debut.
Gator sophomore Joanna Mather (Duluth, Ga.) also capped the inaugural tournament of the season with a hard-fought 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory over South Carolina's Dijana Stojic to take third place in the second flight.
“The highlight of this entire weekend was the play of Allie and Joanna on Sunday,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “Both played their best tennis of the weekend in the third set of the final day and that effort certainly makes me proud. They were fit and found a way to play sound and smart tennis at the very end of the tournament. I feel very good about that.”
Also in action on Sunday was Gator senior Anastasia Revzina (Russia), who lost to South Carolina's 29th-ranked Ana Zubor, 6-2, 6-4, and UF newcomer Claire Bartlett (Chattanooga, Tenn.), who dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Ole Miss' Abigail Guthrie.
The squad returns to the court on Fri., Sept. 25, when Florida plays host to the Gator Fall Classic. The three-day event is an individual singles and doubles tournament held at the Ring Tennis Complex and admission is free.
