Women's Tennis Caps Play at Freeman Memorial Championships

Members of the University of Florida women's tennis team concluded play on Sunday at the Freeman Memorial Championships held at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the campus of UNLV.
The Gator doubles team of Marrit Boonstra and Anastasia Revzina dropped a tough 9-7 decision to North Carolina's top-seeded Sanaz Marand and Sophie Grabinski in the semifinals of the Flight One draw.
In additional singles matches outside of draw play, Revzina rebounded with an impressive 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Arizona State's Kelcy McKenna. Freshman Caroline Hitiman earned a win over Arizona State's Micaela Hein, who retired after Hitiman won the first set, 6-3. Sophomore Claire Bartlett dropped her contest to Stanford's Veronica Li, 6-2, 6-2 on Sunday.
“We had three players who had not competed in a long time and it was good to see them back out on the court,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “We got better as the tournament went along. We were all very fatigued today, as was the whole field, but today was one of those days when effort was going to make a difference. I was happy to see the results we produced and that we fought really, really hard and showed great character.
“Anastasia's play was the highlight,” Thornqvist continued. “It's been the best tennis she's played. She was more versatile and not all power. Her win today was a quality one over a really tough opponent.”
The Gators return to the court on Sun., Jan. 24, when Florida begins its 2009-10 dual match season playing host to North Florida. Admission at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex is free.
