It didn't take long for the University of Florida women's tennis team to heat up on the court against UCF, earning a 6-1 victory Wednesday at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex.
On a very chilly evening in Gainesville, the Gators swept the three doubles matches before needing just 52 minutes to capture the first four singles contests and improve to 2-0 on the young season and 8-0 all-time against the Knights (1-1).
“We showed good improvement from our first match,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “Our doubles matches looked a lot better and without having much practice.”
The Gators dominated the top four singles positions, relinquishing a combined total of three games, with senior Anastasia Revzina (Russia) posting the double-bagel.
Florida's other impressive singles wins were provided by freshman Lauren Embree (Marco Island, Fla.), Caroline Hitimana (Belgium) and senior Marrit Boonstra (The Netherlands).
Freshman Brittany Borsanyi (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) also collected her first collegiate dual match singles victory to give the Gators their sixth point of the dual match.
Revzina posted the second double-bagel of her career and the first since her freshman year, as she gave the Gators a quick 2-0 lead with her 6-0, 6-0 sweep over Jenna Doefler at the No. 3 position in 44 minutes.
“I think I've been improving every year I've been here and I feel like I'm playing my best right now,” Revzina said. “I know the score was 6-0, 6-0, but it doesn't really matter because a match is a match.”
Embree followed four minutes later with a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Andrea Yacaman, who prevented the double-bagel with a break in the fourth game of the second set on the showcase court.
“I got off to a better start than I did in our first dual match,” Embree said. “I kept working on moving forward and tried to improve my game.”
Hitimana provided the dual-match clinching win one minute later by closing out her No. 4 match against Allison Hodges, 6-1, 6-0. Hitimana lost her serve to begin the match, but settled in a hurry and ripped off the next 12 games to earn the 49-minute decision.
Boonstra powered her way past Alexis Rodriguez, 6-1, 6-0, as the UCF sophomore held in the third game of the opening set to prevent the shutout.
The Gators received their sixth team point almost an hour later, when Borsanyi battled past Taylor Dubins for a 7-5, 6-1 victory that lasted an hour and 40 minutes. She rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the first set en route to the straight set win.
UF newcomer Claire Barlett (Chattanooga, Tenn.) dropped a tough 5-7, 6-3 (10-7) match to Katie Orletsky on court No. 5, where the two battled for two hours and seven minutes.
On the doubles court, the No. 1 pairing of Revzina and Embree raced out to a 4-0 lead, before exchanging breaks en route winning their match, 8-2, in 32 minutes. On the third court, sophomore Joanna Mather (Duluth, Ga.) and Hitimana also took a four game lead early. The duo surrendered only one game before the clinching the team doubles point with an 8-1 win. Boonstra and Bartlett also moved swiftly through UCF, winning 8-2 at the No. 2 position to complete the doubles sweep.
“Doubles has been amazing so far,” Revzina shared. “I love my new partner (Embree). We have great communication and I look forward to playing more matches with her.”
Florida returns to the court on Friday, when the Gators play host to the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, which is the first two rounds of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The Gators will play BYU at 10 a.m., while No. 23 SMU and No. 31 FIU take the court at 1 p.m. On Saturday, the losing teams play at 10 a.m., while the winning teams from the first round square off at 1 p.m. for the right to advance to Madison, Wis., for the remainder of the 64-team event that resumes with the round of 16 on Feb. 12.
