Women's Tennis Has Impressive Opening Day at ITA Southeast Regional

All eight members of the University of Florida women's tennis team competing won their respective first round singles matches, while all three Gator doubles teams advanced on the opening day of play at the ITA Southeast Regionals held at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Five Gators then capped a successful second-round of singles action, with Allie Will (Boca Raton, Fla.), Olivia Janowicz (Palm Bay, Fla.), Sofie Oyen (Leopoldsburg, Belgium), Joanna Mather (Duluth, Ga.) and Alex Cercone (Seminole, Fla.) all advancing to the round of 16.
“Overall, it was a very good day,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “I was really pleased. Everyone won their first round matches and when we went down in the second round, we were tough outs. We competed well and hopefully we can continue to play better. We played better in the second round today and it's a good sign if we can continue to play better each match.”
Brittany Borsanyi (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.), Claire Bartlett (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Caroline Hitimana (Waterloo, Belgium) battled but dropped their respective second-round contest.
Florida began the day with solid wins on the doubles court, with the pair of Mather and Hitimana downing Vera Shkundina and Avano Tanaka of Kennesaw State, 8-3. Cercone and Janowicz earned an 8-1 victory against UCF's Jenny Frisell and Courtney Griffith, while Oyen and Will blanked Mercer's Jennifer Lada and Aurelie de Montiou, 8-0.
A busy Saturday begins a 9 a.m., when two round of main draw doubles will be played, followed by the round of 16 main draw singles matches.
