Borsanyi and Mather Highlight Women's Tennis Gator Fall Classic Opening Day

University of Florida junior Joanna Mather (Duluth, Ga.) and sophomore Brittany Borsanyi (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) won their respective singles matches to highlight action on the first day of the Gator Fall Classic held at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex on Friday.
Mather began the day on the doubles court and paired with sophomore Caroline Hitimana (Waterloo, Belgium) for an 8-3 victory against FIU's Lisa Johnson and Liset Brito in the only Gator doubles match played.
“I thought this was a pretty good first day,” UF associate head coach Dave Balogh said. “We worked on some things in doubles, in particular with attacking and putting pressure on them and I thought Jo and Caroline did a good job with those things.”
Mather then toppled Florida State's Federica Suess, 6-1, 6-1, to capture the 50th singles victory of her collegiate career.
Borsanyi also netted an impressive win, earning a 6-3, 6-2 decision versus FSU's Manon Veldman.
“Joanna kept things simple in her match and was very business-like in her win,” Balogh said. “Brittany didn't give away free points and that was a bright side.”
Hitimana had a tough singles outing, dropping a 6-3, 6-2 count to South Florida's Janette Bejlkova.
“That was a disappointment,” Balogh said. “Her attitude was poor and she didn't compete at all. Hopefully, she can turn things around tomorrow.”
The event continues on Saturday at 9 a.m. and admission is free. Doubles matches begin the day, followed by singles play.
