Women's Tennis Continues Impressive Showing at ITA Southeast Regional
Sunday, October 24, 2010 | Women's Tennis
The University of Florida continued its success at the ITA Women's Tennis Southeast Regional, as four Gators advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles draw and a pair of doubles teams marched into the semifinals on Saturday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
“Overall, we had another really good day,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “I was very impressed with our doubles play. At times we haven't played our best tennis, but we've competed incredibly well. Tactically, we've been able to adjust and that's very pleasing.”
Sophomore Allie Will (Boca Raton, Fla.) led the freshmen trio of Olivia Janowicz (Palm Bay, Fla.), Sofie Oyen (Leopoldsburg, Belgium) and Alex Cercone (Seminole, Fla.) into the singles quarterfinals, as all three rookies knocked off a nationally-ranked opponent to advance.
Will, the top-seed in the 64-player singles draw, defeated Georgia Tech's Jillian O'Neill, 6-2, 6-4, and will face Florida State's Katie Rybakova on Sunday.
Cercone took down the event's No. 2 seed Bianca Eichkorn from Miami, the nation's 14th-ranked player, 7-5, 6-4, to earn a quarterfinal date against Georgia's Maho Kowase.
Janowicz upended Georgia's 31st-ranked Nadja Gilchrist, 6-3, 6-3, while Oyen rallied from a 5-1 first-set deficit to earn a 7-5, 6-3 victory against South Florida's 86th-ranked Ecaterina Vasenina. The two Gators will play each other in on Sunday.
Junior Joanna Mather (Duluth, Ga.) was the lone Gator who fell in the round of 16, as she dropped the 6-4, 6-2 score to South Florida's 30th-ranked Irene Rehberger.
Mather's play isn't over at the event, however, as she and sophomore Caroline Hitimana (Waterloo, Belgium) advanced to the doubles semifinals after a pair of impressive victories on Saturday, including a 8-0 shutout over Georgia Tech's 29th-ranked team of Caroline Lilley/Sasha Krupina in the round of 16.
Oyen and Will also reached the semifinals after an 8-0 shutout against North Florida's Aline Berkenbrock and Melanie Aguirre, before posting an 8-3 win against Miami's Mejia and Rizzolo.
The doubles run of Cercone and Janowicz came to an end in the round of 16, as they fell to Florida State's 39th-ranked pair of Francesca Segarelli and Federica Suess, 8-6.
Two rounds of singles matches are scheduled for Sunday, as is the semifinal round of the doubles draw.
