More than a dozen British athletes and several Australians have developed a mysterious illness, causing a media frenzy in England and prompting all sorts of speculation.
The suspected culprit is the water in the pool at the Commonwealth Games, although testing has not confirmed the water is contaminated in any way.
Meanwhile, the UF swimming program is represented by seven athletes at the Commonwealth Games who have reported no illnesses. Gators men's associate head coach Anthony Nesty is also in India traveling with the UF contingent.
Four current Gators – junior Marco Loughran (Wales), junior Jemma Lowe (Wales), senior Brett Fraser (Cayman Islands) and sophomore Sebastien Rousseau (South Africa) – are competing in the games. The three former Gators competing are Shaune Fraser (Cayman Islands), Stephanie Proud (England) and Gemma Spofforth (England).
While many of her English teammates have fallen ill, Spofforth won the silver in the 100-meter backstroke. Lowe has won a bronze in the 100-meter butterfly and Rousseau won a bronze as part of South Africa's 800-meter free relay team.
Loughran is expected to medal in the 100 back on Friday and Spofforth is expected to medal in the 50 and 200 back.
