Women's Golf Opens Play at Pac-10/SEC Challenge
Saturday, November 6, 2010 | Women's Golf
The No. 25 UF women's golf team is in 17th place at the end of the first round of the inaugural Pac-10/SEC Challenge. The Gators recorded a team score of 309 (+25) at the par-71, 6,103-yard Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calif.
“It really was not a very good day for the Gators,” Florida Head Coach Jan Dowling said. “We made some bogeys on par-5's and we made some doubles and triples (bogeys) and those really hurt us.”
The course was demanding the entire day as only 21 players managed to finish even-par or better and every team in the field was over par in the first round.
“The rough is pretty deep and you have to hit a lot of fairways,” Dowling said. “We have to take our medicine when we get in trouble and not compound our mistakes because it is a tough golf course.”
The Gators were led by junior Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.) who completed her day tied for 29th overall after posting a two-under 73. Jensen got off to a strong start with a birdie on the par-4 second and was one-under through four before encountering difficulties. She bogeyed No. 5, bounced back with a birdie on No. 6, and then went bogey-double bogey-bogey to complete the front nine. However, Jensen rebounded by firing a one-under on the back nine to turn in the Gators' top performance of the day. Jensen had the sixth-most birdies of the 108 players competing as she buried four during her round.
“Evan turned it around,” Dowling said. “She birdied 14 and 17, two pretty tough par-3's and that was good.”
Junior Marika Lendl (Goshen, Conn.) completed her first 18 holes with four-over 75, placing her in a tie for 48th. After a bogey on the par-5 first, she birdied No. 4 and was even through five holes. The Connecticut native made six bogeys over her next eight holes along with a birdie and a par to fall to five-over but finished well with four pars and a birdie on the par-5 16th to end her afternoon. She was the only Gator to avoid anything worse than a bogey en route to a round that kept her in the hunt on the individual leaderboard. Lendl, along with four other golfers, was the best in the first round on the par-3's as she was two-under on the five par-3 holes on the course.
“Marika was one-under her last five holes,” Dowling noted. “We were fortunate to have her and Evan finish strong for us .”
Sophomore Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) made one birdie, nine pars, six bogeys and two double bogeys en route to a nine-over 80 which left her in a tie for 85th. Junior Andrea Watts (Bradenton, Fla.) carded a 10-over 81, putting her in a tie for 90th. Sophomore Isabelle Lendl (Goshen, Conn.) ended the first day with an 18-over 89 which has her in 108th.
Isabelle Lendl will begin play for Florida in the second round of the Pac-10/SEC Challenge at 11:20 a.m. ET Saturday. She will be followed by Watts at 11:30, Piccio at 11:40, Marika Lendl at 11:50 and Jensen at 12:00.
