W-Tennis Drops Consolation QF to UCLA, 4-1
Monday, February 15, 2010 | Women's Tennis
Having to finish a marathon-length match on the same day as playing another was too much for the seventh-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team to overcome, as the Gators lost to No. 12 UCLA, 4-1, on Sunday in the consolation quarterfinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Wisconsin at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
The Gators (7-2) were coming off a grueling 4-3 loss to No. 2-seeded Northwestern that featured five three-setters and didn't conclude until after midnight Eastern Time.
Florida returned to the court approximately 15 hours later to face the Bruins (7-1) and lost the doubles point for the first time this season, dropping the No. 3 and No. 1 positions that gave UCLA an early 1-0 lead.
UCLA then jumped out to early leads on singles courts Nos. 1, 2 and 3, earning straight set decisions on at the No. 1 and 3 spots to take a 3-0 lead.
Freshman Allie Will (Boca Raton, Fla.) prevented the shut-out, as she rallied from a one-set deficit to earn a 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory at the No. 2 position. Freshman Caroline Hitimana (Belgium) was close to closing out a win on court No. 5, but UCLA ended the dual match with a 6-2, 6-4 decision at the No. 6 court and play was abandoned at the remaining spots.
The Gators return to the court on Tue., Feb. 23, when Florida plays host to instate rival and 20th-ranked Florida State. First serve from Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET and admission is free.
