The No. 12 University of Florida men's tennis team closed out its competition at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va., with a 4-0 victory over seventh-ranked Georgia.
“Tonight's match was close, especially in doubles, coming down to the tiebreaker, but it is great to come out of this event with two wins against top-seven teams,” UF head coach Andy Jackson said. “Georgia's got a lot of championship-level players, and it was good to see us bounce back so quickly from a loss yesterday.”
On the doubles court, Alexandre Lacroix (Paris, France) and Antoine Benneteau (Boulogne-Billancourt, France) posted their 10th consecutive victory (19-1 in 2009-10), while Daniel Cash (Oslo, Norway) and Bob Van Overbeek (Boca Raton, Fla.) clinched the doubles point for the Gators with a hard-fought 9-8 (2) victory on court three.
Lacroix then provided the first singles point for UF, nabbing a 6-0, 6-3 victory at first singles over Nate Schnugg. Soon after, Nassim Slilam (Paris, France) capped his perfect weekend at singles with a straight-sets win at the sixth position over Christian Vitulli, and Sekou Bangoura Jr. (Bradenton, Fla.) put the match away for Florida with a 6-4, 6-3 defeat of Bo Seal at No. 5.
The Gators stand at 6-2 overall this spring following the weekend tournament. They will be in action again on Sunday, Feb. 21, at 1 p.m., when they take on USF at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex. The meeting with the Bulls is the first of three home dates in a span of eight days, as UF will also face Florida State (Feb. 24) and Illinois (Feb. 28) before opening SEC play.
