Florida's Charlotte Browning (Pullborough, England) and Jeff Demps (Winter Garden, Fla.) each have earned Southeastern Conference Athlete of the Week honors for their exceptional performances this past weekend, the league offices in Birmingham, Ala., announced Tuesday.
Browning was named the SEC's Female Runner of the Week, while Demps was honored as the SEC's Male Freshman of the Week for the second consecutive week.
Browning won the women's mile at the Husky Classic in Seattle this past weekend in a personal-record and NCAA automatic-qualifying time of 4:31.24 against a competitive field that included three of the nation's top-six times this season and three automatic-qualifiers.
Browning's mile time ranks third in the world this season and goes down as the fastest time in the NCAA this season. She is more than three seconds faster than the second-fastest time in the NCAA this season. Browning broke a nearly 13-year-old UF school record of 4:33.04 set by Becki Wells and shattered her own previous personal-best mile time of 4:36.09. She also broke the Dempsey facility record of 4:31.87.
Demps won the men's 60-meter dash at the prestigious Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville , Ark., in an NCAA automatic-qualifying time of 6.59. That time tied current teammate Terrell Wilks for the Florida school 60-meter record and bested Demps' previous personal-record time of 6.61 achieved the previous week at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet.
Demps holds the fastest time in the nation so far this season in the men's 60-meter dash and currently ranks 15th in the world. He accomplished that finals time after placing second overall in the prelims at 6.62.
Florida has the week off from competition before returning to action Feb. 26-28, when the team travels to Fayetteville, Ark., to participate in the Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Arkansas.
