2010 SECs: Day 4 Morning Session
Saturday, February 20, 2010 | Women's Swimming & Diving
Gemma Spofforth (West Sussex, England), Marco Loughran (London, England) and Jemma Lowe (Hartlepool, England) recorded first-place preliminary finishes to lead the Gators into the final evening of competition at the 2010 SEC Championship Meet in Athens Saturday. Spofforth and Loughran both finished first in their respective 200-yard backstroke fields, while Lowe, the defending SEC Champion in the 200 fly, secured a first-place seed in this year's events to set UF up for Saturday finals.
The Gators will have 29 consolation and finals swims and dives as the UF women strive to hold on to second place and close the gap with current first-place team, Georgia, and the men try to overcome a 13-point differential with Auburn for their first SEC title since 1993. Every scoring swimmer that swam prelims for the Orange and Blue Saturday is set to compete in finals.
In addition to the two No. 1 seeds, several Gators turned in second-place preliminary finishes, including sophomore Teresa Crippen (Conshohocken , Pa.) in the 200-yard back (1:54.92) and 200-yard fly, senior Omar Pinzon (Bogota, Colombia) in the 200-yard back (1:42.21), sophomore Shara Stafford (Topeka, Kan.) in the 100-yard freestyle (48.44) and senior Shaune Fraser (George Town, Grand Cayman), the defending NCAA Champion in the 200 fly).
Both UF women's platform divers also ecured finals berths, senior Kara Salamone (Cooper City, Fla.) and junior Monica Dodson (Franklin, Ind.) entering the championship round in third and fifth, respectively.
In addition to the 200-yard back, 100-yard free, 200-yard breast and 200-yard fly, the finals session will include the mile, the women's three-meter platform and the men's and women's 400-yard freestyle relay. The first heats of the mile are scheduled to begin at 3:25 p.m. and continue to the 6 p.m. finals start.
