Sunday, February 7, 2010 | Women's Golf
The University of Florida women's golf team kicks off their 2010 spring season as they travel to Palos Verdes, Calif. for the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge. The event, which is hosted by Ohio State University, will be played at the par-71, 5,192-yard Palos Verdes Golf Club. The Gators will play 18 holes each day from Monday through Wednesday.
Head coach Jan Dowling and a team of two freshman, two sophomores and a junior will attempt to earn the squad's first tournament title this year. Freshman Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) will lead the lineup, followed by sophomore Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla) and freshman Isabelle Lendl (Bradenton, Fla.). Sophomore Marika Lendl (Bradenton, Fla.) and junior Jessica Yadloczky (Casselberry, Fla.) will round out the lineup.
Florida will face a tough tournament field, as the reigning champion for each of the last seven tournaments is participating. Arizona State won last year's Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge and also claimed the title in 2006. UCLA, champions in 2004 and 2008, and Pepperdine, 2005 and 2007 champs, will also be in attendance. The Gators are the only team participating from the Southeastern Conference and the only team from the Sunshine State as well.
Five of the 14 teams participating in California are featured in Golfweek's top-10. Top-ranked Arizona State, No. 2 UCLA, No. 5 Michigan State, No. 7 Duke and No. 9 Southern California will all be in attendance. Florida (11), Pepperdine (13), Wake Forest (15) and Denver (18) round out the top-25.
The Gators will tee off on Monday morning, please visit www.GatorZone.com or www.golfstat.com for live scoring and updated results.
