On a beautiful, yet chilly day, the seventh-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team defeated the Troy Trojans, 7-0, at Linder Stadium at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex Sunday afternoon.
The Gators' No. 26-ranked doubles pair of senior Marrit Boonstra (Groningen, The Netherlands) and freshman Allie Will (Boca Raton, Fla.) won the first seven games on court No. 1, before the Trojan pair of Karoline Grymel and Leonie Guijt was able to get on the board. The freshman then laid a soft drop shot and slammed a shot over the right of the net to give Florida a 30-0 lead. Troy sent the next two shots long, enabling Florida to take the first doubles match, 8-1, in 35 minutes.
In midst of a heated battle on doubles court No. 3, senior Anastasia Revzina (Moscow, Russia) and freshman Carolina Hitimana (Waterloo, Belgium) were dominating on doubles court No. 2, as well. In their first time playing together the freshman/senior duo broke their Trojan opponents take a 7-2 lead into the 10th game. After Troy sent a shot wide to give the Gators a 40-30 lead, a long rally occurred and with both Trojans at the net, Hitimana lobbed a shot to the back line to clinch the doubles point for Florida with the 8-2 win.
A few minutes later, another first-time pairing of sophomore Claire Bartlett (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and freshman Brittany Borsanyi (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) made it a clean sweep for Florida in doubles play. The Gators led most of the way on court No. 3, but traded breaks at 4-4. With each team holding serve, the Gators led 7-6 and Bartlett and Borsanyi battled back to take the win.
“It was one of their first outings. It came down to their match with everyone watching. I thought they performed admirably. They managed themselves well and were able to win a tough 8-6 doubles match,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said of Bartlett and Borsanyi.
Singles play was also controlled by the Gators.
Hitimana played at the No. 4 position for the second time this season. She ran through her opponent, Stephanie Vieira, 6-0, 6-2. A well-paced shot to the far right corner secured the first singles point for Florida in under 52 minutes.
“Caroline keeps improving. Every match she gets a little bit better and today was no exception. She gets sharper and sharper and I've been real pleased with her progress,” Thornqvist said of the Gator rookie, who saw limited action during the fall season due to injury.
On the No. 2 court, No. 81-ranked Boonstra also wasted little time in earning her fifth straight victory of the season. The senior broke her opponent three times to take the first set, 6-0. She built a 3-0 lead, before Lauren Simpson of Troy broke her serve to make it 3-1. Boonstra broke right back and clinched the second set, 6-2, shortly after.
The match-clinching point came on singles court No. 3, where Revzina's serve was returned just wide of the line. The No. 92-ranked player broke six of her opponent's seven serves to improve to 4-0 this season.
Borsanyi had appeared to be on her way to clinching the match for Florida after she bageled her opponent in the first set and jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second. Troy's Emma Smith fought back, winning four straight games to take a 4-2 lead. But Borsanyi dug deep to regain control of the match. At 5-4, the freshman and her opponent used the entire court in an effort to wear each other out trading points. However, with match point on the line, Smith returned a serve high in the air. Borsanyi approached the net and ended the contest with a powerful shot to the corner where Smith was standing.
The other Florida freshman, Allie Will, as well as Bartlett, also had closely contested matches.
The No. 13-ranked Will saw her first action of the season on the No. 1 singles court. Both she and her Trojan opponent, Karoline Grymel, broke each other's serves twice in the first set, but Will took the set, 6-4. The second set was just as close, with both players fighting for advantages to win each game. The Gators came out on top again, winning 6-1 after Grymel sent a shot wide left. Will is now 4-0 on the dual match season.
The longest match of the day took place on singles court No. 5, where Bartlett also battled through many advantage points. She broke six of her opponent's seven services to win, 6-1, 6-0 and improved to 14-8 overall this season.
“I thought we did well. We were tested a little bit. We came out with three doubles matches and I thought we did well in singles. We were moving were well and made good decisions. Today, was a good match to get ready for tomorrow,” Thornqvist said.
Florida's record is now 5-0 on the season. Entering tomorrow's 3 p.m. home match against USF, the Gators have won 81 consecutive regular-season home matches, which is the longest in program history.
