Track and Field's Demps, Proctor Earn SEC Weekly Honors

Florida's Jeff Demps (Winter Garden, Fla.) and Shara Proctor (The Valley, Anguilla) each have earned Athlete of the Week honors from the Southeastern Conference for their outstanding performances at last weekend's Virginia Tech Elite Meet, the league offices in Birmingham, Ala., announced Tuesday.
Demps was named the SEC Male Freshman of the Week, while Proctor was named the SEC Female Field Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week. The Gators have totaled five weekly honors so far this season from the SEC.
In the first collegiate indoor meet of his career, Demps placed second in the finals of the men's 60-meter dash at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet with the second-fastest time in school history at 6.61, just off the NCAA automatic-qualifying standard of 6.60.
Demps charted the fastest time of any competitor in the preliminary round at 6.64, which at the time was the fourth-fastest time in school history. He ranks second in the nation so far this season in the men's 60-meter dash.
Proctor had the most impressive weekend of her collegiate career, winning both the women's triple jump and long jump events at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet with automatic-qualifying marks, school-record marks, SEC-leading marks and nation-leading marks in both events.
She won the long jump with a nation-leading mark of 6.67m/21-10.75, which went down as the 12th-best women's long jump in collegiate history and set a new Rector Field House record.
Proctor then won the triple jump event with a personal-best leap of 13.88m/45-6.60, breaking a nearly 18-year-old school record of 13.40m/43-11.75 set in 1992. It goes down as the eight-best women's triple jump mark in collegiate history.
