Florida head track and field coach Mike Holloway has been named the 2010 U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association National Men's Indoor Head Coach of the Year, the New Orleans-based organization announced Friday.
Holloway is in his eighth season as Florida's head men's coach and his third directing the combined men's and women's program. The 2010 USTFCCCA South Region Men's and Women's Indoor Head Coach of the Year, Holloway led the Gator men's track and field team to its first NCAA Indoor Championship in school history by scoring 57 total team points and defeating the nearest competition by 13 points. Florida also posted a second-place finish at the 2010 SEC Indoor Championships.
Holloway's men recorded 14 All-America honors, which tied for the national lead in 2010. That included NCAA individual championships by freshman sprinter Jeff Demps (Winter Garden, Fla.) in the men's 60-meter dash and sophomore jumper Christian Taylor (Fayetteville, Ga.) in the men's triple jump. Demps, who is directly coached by Holloway, broke Florida's school record in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.56 in the preliminaries at the NCAA Indoor Championships before winning the national crown by clocking a time of 6.57 in the finals of the event.
Holloway also directed senior sprinter Calvin Smith (Lutz, Fla.) to a then-nation-leading time in the 200-meter dash at 20.67 earlier this year and three All-America honors. Under Holloway's direction, Smith has earned more All-America honors than any other athlete in school history (16). He mentored freshman sprinter Tony McQuay (Riviera Beach, Fla.) to a third-place finish in the 200m dash at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
The honor is the first of Holloway's career as Florida's head coach.
