Track and Field Wins Seven Events at Black and Gold Challenge
Sunday, March 21, 2010 | Track and Field
The University of Florida track and field teams captured seven events on the opening day of the 2010 outdoor season Saturday at the UCF Black and Gold Challenge hosted by the University of Central Florida at its UCF Track and Field Complex.
The meet, which included athletes from Arkansas, Bethune-Cookman, Florida, Florida Tech, Kentucky and host UCF, served as a low-key competition for the purposes of kick-starting the outdoor season.
“I thought it was a good season-opening meet that allowed our younger athletes to get some experience and help them get ready for the outdoor season,” Florida head coach Mike Holloway said. “I was especially impressed with Sean Obinwa in his opening race to get the victory and more than a second PR in the 800.”
Freshman middle distance runner Sean Obinwa (Tampa, Fla.) charted an impressive victory in the men's 800-meter run, winning in a personal-record time of 1:51.96. He led a quartet of Gators who placed in the event's top five, including second-place Ethan Philpot (1:52.30) and third-place John Mitchell (1:54.12).
Redshirt freshman thrower Jeremy Postin (Andover, Kan.), whose indoor season was characterized by consistent improvement each week, began his outdoor campaign with a win in the men's hammer throw with a toss of 56.90m/186-8. Fellow thrower David Triassi (St. Johns, Fla.) placed second in the event with a throw of 56.32m/184-9.
Junior pole vaulter Daisy Glasser (Atlantic Beach, Fla.) claimed the women's pole vault with a leap of 3.66m/12-0. Sophomore Claire Spurling (Jacksonville, Fla.) placed third at 3.51m/11-6.25 and freshman Caitlin Schuessler (Boca Raton, Fla.) was fourth at 3.51m/11-6.25.
Freshman jumper Alexis Muniz (Coconut Creek, Fla.) won the women's high jump with a leap of 1.65m/5-5 for her first collegiate victory.
The Florida women's 4x100-meter relay team picked up a victory in the event, winning in a time of 45.31. The quartet consisted of freshman Lanie Whittaker (Miami, Fla.), sophomore Alishea Usery (St. Louis, Mo.), junior Danielle Williams (Jacksonville, Fla.) and senior Shara Proctor (The Valley, Anguilla).
Junior hurdler Jarius Cooper (Palm Coast, Fla.) won the men's 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.26 (-0.7), while 2010 NCAA Indoor All-American Preston Wilson (Orlando, Fla.) captured the 400-meter dash in a time of 48.04.
Florida returns to action next Saturday when it makes a return visit to Orlando, Fla., to compete in the UCF Invitational, also hosted by UCF.
