Women's Golf Tied for Sixth At Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic
Friday, March 26, 2010 | Women's Golf
The University of Florida women's golf team is currently tied for sixth after the first round of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic on Friday. The No. 10 Gators shot a team score of 314 (+26) and is just four strokes shy of the second-place score.
“Today was a tough day,” said head coach Jan Dowling. “It was really windy and the course was challenging without the difficult conditions. I think the team has bitter taste in their mouths but at the same time we are not in a bad position. We still have two more days of golf and we need to go out there and take care of the basics.”
Sophomore Evan Jensen (Bellaire, Fla.) is one of the veterans in Florida's lineup, which consists of two sophomores and three freshmen. Jensen's experience was on display as she shot the low UF round on Friday. She was one-over after collecting two bogeys and a birdie in her first nine holes. Jensen made a bogey on her 11th, birdie on her 14th and a bogey on her 15th hole before closing her first round with a double bogey on her final hole. She is currently tied for 12th with a 76 (+4).
Fellow sophomore Marika Lendl (Bradenton, Fla.) finished just one stroke away from Jensen, with a 77 (+5) on day one. Lendl began her round with two-straight bogeys and followed with back-to-back bogeys on her sixth and seventh holes to enter the back nine at four-over. After a bogey on her 12th, she carded two bogeys in her last three holes. Lendl is currently tied for 22nd.
Freshman Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) is tied for 32nd after carding a seven-over 79 on Friday. Piccio tallied three bogeys in her first nine holes before making four bogeys, a double bogey and two birdies in her final nine holes. Isabelle Lendl (Bradenton, Fla.) carded an 82 (+10) in her first nine, notching nine bogeys, one double bogey and one birdie. The freshman is tied for 66th. Freshman Megan Pak (Bradenton, Fla.) rounded out UF's lineup in a tie for 92nd with an 84 (+12).
Duke currently leads the 23-team field after 18 holes with a 300 (+12).
The Gators tee off for the second round on Saturday beginning at 9:55 a.m. ET. Official results and live scoring can be found at www.GatorZone.com or www.golfstat.com.
