Wednesday, April 14, 2010 | Women's Tennis
GatorVision Online caught up with University of Florida women's tennis freshmen sensations Lauren Embree (Marco Island, Fla.) and Allie Will (Boca Raton, Fla.) to get their reaction about winning the Southeastern Conference regular-season championship last weekend.
Jon Rubin asked both about their phenomenal rookie seasons, as they have produced great individual success while helping the Gators to a No. 3 national ranking and a 20-2 overall record entering Saturday's regular-season finale at South Carolina. He also got their thoughts about the senior leadership provided by Marrit Boonstra (The Netherlands) and Anastasia Revzina (Moscow, Russia).
The Gators were able to wrap up the SEC regular-season title after big 6-1 victories on the road at then-No. 16 Tennessee and at then-No. 14 Georgia.
Embree has played the No. 1 singles position in every dual match this season, compiling an impressive 15-3 record in those contests, including a 9-0 record against SEC foes. She has won her last 12 singles matches, which includes last weekend's pair of victories against the No. 10 and No. 11-ranked players in the country. On the doubles court, Embree patrols the No. 2 spot, where she has produced a 29-5 overall record, including a 16-2 dual match mark and an 8-1 ledger in SEC action.
Will has been equally impressive, as she enters Saturday's match riding a team-best 19-match singles win streak, while sporting a team-best 39-3 overall record. She is 19-0 in dual match play, winning 18 matches at the No. 2 position in the singles lineup and one match at the No. 1 spot. In doubles, Will plays on the No. 1 court in team competition, where she is 18-2 this year, including 8-1 in SEC action. Will also carries a 31-5 overall doubles record.
Embree and Will have earned a total of six SEC Freshman of the Week honors this season, with each claiming three.
