Gray Horn In Third Place After Day One of Mt. Sac
Thursday, April 15, 2010 | Track and Field
Sophomore Florida multi-event athlete Gray Horn (Waynesfield, Ohio) recorded a first-day decathlon score of 3,966 on Wednesday and currently stands in third place after the opening day of the Mt. Sac Relays Multi-Events hosted by Azusa Pacific University at Cougar Stadium.
Horn, who opened the day incredibly strong with first-place finishes in his opening two events, finished with a score of 3,966, which is just seven points shy of his career-best opening-day decathlon score of 3,973 recorded at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships. The Mt. Sac Relays is Horn's first decathlon competition of the 2010 season.
Lars Rise of Missouri leads the decathlon competition with 4,061 total points, while his teammate Nick Adcock is second with 4,004 points. Horn is just 95 points off the decathlon lead heading into the final five events of the competition.
The second day of the Mt. Sac Relays Multi-Events begins at 3:30 p.m. ET Thursday with the 110-meter hurdles. For complete, live coverage, follow Florida's Twitter account at www.twitter.com/GZTrackField.
“Gray had a very good first day,” Florida multi-events coach Mellanee Welty said. “He has been practicing really, really well. We knew he was ready to come out and run a PR in the 100 and, after Florida Relays, we knew he was going to long jump well. There were high points and low points today, but Gray started off very strong and this is a sign of good things to come. He just needs to come back tomorrow in the last five events and have another good day.”
Horn opened the day by running a personal-record time of 10.85 (+2.0) in the 100-meter dash to earn 895 points and tie for first place in the event. That bested his previous personal-record time of 10.94 (-0.7) run at the 2009 Texas Relays.
Horn then moved to the long jump, an event in which he has shown impressive improvement this season. He captured the event with a decathlon-best mark of 7.39m/24-3, which was just shy of the personal-record mark of 7.59m/24-11 recorded at the 66th Pepsi Florida Relays two weeks ago. After two events Wednesday, Horn held the decathlon lead with 1,803 points.
Horn recorded a solid shot put of 11.95m/39-2.50 before struggling in the men's high jump with a leap of 1.95m/6-5 to place sixth in that event overall.
Horn closed out the day with a strong showing in the 400-meter dash of 50.45, marking the second-best performance of his collegiate career in that event.
