Horn Records Second-Best Decathlon in School History
Friday, April 16, 2010 | Track and Field
Sophomore Florida multi-event athlete Gray Horn (Waynesfield, Ohio) turned in the second-best decathlon score in school history Thursday, charting 7,566 total points to place third at the Mt. Sac Relays Multi-Events hosted by Azusa Pacific University at Cougar Stadium.
Horn, who entered the meet ranked fourth all-time in school history in the decathlon, recorded a personal-record score of 7,566 in his first decathlon competition of the 2010 campaign. Horn surpassed Liston Bochette (7,565) for second-place on the school's all-time decathlon list.
“This was a really successful start to the outdoor season for Gray,” Florida multi-events coach Mellanee Welty said. “He came in here and had a good meet with a PR overall. The running events came easily to him and that's a really good sign of things to come. We've seen a lot of improvement as we get ready to go into the championship season.”
Horn opened up the day with a personal-record time of 14.59 (+1.5) in the 110-meter hurdles. That topped his previous personal-best time of 14.62 and his previous-best decathlon PR of 14.74.
Horn followed up with a fourth-place finish in the discus at 38.96m/127-10, which was just off his personal-record throw of 39.02m/128-0, recorded at the 2009 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships. Horn moved into second place overall after that event with 5,509 total points through seven events.
Horn tied for fifth in the heptathlon pole vault with a leap of 4.50m/14-9 before placing ninth in the javelin with a toss of 47.75m/156-8, marking a decathlon personal-record in that event.
Horn concluded the decathlon in fine fashion, winning the 1,500m run in a time of 4:30.76. His personal-record time in that event is 4:29.19, recorded at last season's SEC Championships.
The Florida track and field returns to action this Saturday when it plays host to the Tom Jones Memorial Classic at James G. Pressly Stadium at Percy Beard Track. The meet begins at 1 p.m. ET and admission is free and open to the public.
