Van Overbeek Earns SEC Men's Tennis Co-Freshman of the Week Honors
Tuesday, April 20, 2010 | Men's Tennis
Florida freshman Bob Van Overbeek (Boca Raton, Fla.) has been named the Southeastern Conference Co-Freshman of the Week for men's tennis, the league office announced on Tuesday.
This week's recognition brings Van Overbeek to four SEC Freshman of the Week honors this spring, most in the conference. He shared this week's honor with Tennessee's Rhyne Williams. It is the fifth such honor for Florida this spring, as Sekou Bangoura Jr. (Bradenton, Fla.) was also named SEC Freshman of the Week once this season.
Van Overbeek had a pair of big wins last Saturday as the Gators closed out their regular season with a home win over South Carolina, 6-1. Van Overbeek and doubles partner Daniel Cash (Oslo, Norway) clinched the doubles point for the Gators, and Van Overbeek provided the match-clinching singles victory on court four. That marked the second consecutive match that Van Overbeek clinched for UF, including its April 11 win over Georgia.
Van Overbeek posted a 9-1 singles record in SEC play this season and won 11 of his final 12 matches in the regular season.
Van Overbeek's performance helped propel Florida to a second-place regular season finish in the SEC, earning a first-round bye heading into this week's conference tournament in Lexington, Ky. The Gators will be in action at noon on Friday, April 23, facing the winner of Thursday's first-round contest between Mississippi State and Vanderbilt.
