Track and Field Heads to Prestigious Penn Relays
Tuesday, April 20, 2010 | Track and Field
The University of Florida track and field teams embark on the City of Brotherly Love to participate in the prestigious 116th Penn Relays Carnival at historic Franklin Field this Thursday-Saturday.
The event begins at 12 p.m. ET Thursday and continues at 10 a.m. ET Friday and 11 a.m. ET Saturday. Live results and a complete schedule can be found at www.thepennrelays.com. Flotrack will be providing live video coverage of the entire meet for the first time in its history, which will be available at http://www.flotrack.org/videos/coverage/view/236836/live.
Florida enters the meet with a pair of top-five rankings as the men's team – the 2010 NCAA Indoor Champion – is the nation's No. 1 team, while the Gator women are ranked No. 5 nationally.
The UF men's sprint relays have a great shot to challenge for a number of the Championship of America titles this weekend. The 4x400-meter relay team is currently ranked No. 1 in the world this season with a time of 3:00.31 recorded at the 66th Pepsi Florida Relays on April 3. The Gators' 4x100-meter relay team ranks No. 1 and Florida also ranks first in the world this season in the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:20.38.
Senior sprinter Calvin Smith (Lutz, Fla.) won the men's 400-meter dash at the Tom Jones Memorial Classic this past weekend in Gainesville with a world-leading time of 44.81, that goes down as the second-fastest time in school history.
Senior thrower Mariam Kevkhishvili (Tbilisi, Georgia) ranks first in the nation and No. 9 in the world currently in the women's shot put with a mark of 18.46m/60-6.75, becoming just the second person in school history to eclipse the 60-foot plateau in the women's shot put.
Redshirt freshman thrower Jeremy Postin (Andover, Kan.) on Saturday broke his own school record in the men's hammer throw for the second time this season with a toss of 60.59m/198-8, becoming the first person in school history to throw better than 60 meters in the men's shot put.
Each of those three athletes earned weekly honors from the Southeastern Conference for their stellar performances this past weekend.
The objective of the Penn Relays, which began in 1895, is to provide the best competition for the greatest number of participants of all levels, ages and abilities. In its 115-year history, the Penn Relays have provided competition for more athletes than any other track meet in the world. In the past 10 years alone, more than 100,000 young men and women from high schools, clubs, colleges, armed services, prep schools, junior high schools, parochial schools and elementary schools have competed in the event.
Complete results and a recap of Florida's participation in the Penn Relays Carnival will be available at www.GatorZone.com.
