Florida freshman Bob Van Overbeek (Boca Raton, Fla.) has been named to the Southeastern Conference Men's Tennis Community Team, which recognizes student-athletes from the SEC who give back to their community in superior service efforts, the league office announced.
Van Overbeek has been an active participant in the Goodwill Gators program, spending time with children at UF's Shands Hospital every chance he gets, often more than once a week.
He also participates in a regular after-school exercise program at Stephen Foster Elementary School in Gainesville, engaging in games and other activities and encouraging students to live active lives. Recently, Van Overbeek participated in a pep rally for local students getting ready to take their FCATs (Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test), talking with them about the importance of getting good grades.
The off-court recognition adds to a growing list of on-court accomplishments Van Overbeek has achieved since enrolling at UF in January, including a league-best four SEC Freshman of the Week honors this spring.
In SEC action, Van Overbeek posted a 9-1 singles and 7-3 doubles record, helping UF to a 9-1 conference record and 17-3 overall. The Boca Raton native is 15-5 overall in singles and 14-7 in doubles.
The Gators open the SEC Tournament on Friday at noon in Lexington, Ky., where they face the winner of today's first-round matchup between Mississippi State and Vanderbilt. UF received a first-round bye as the No. 2 seed in the tournament.
