Mariam Kevkhishvili Named SEC Female Field Athlete of the Week
Tuesday, April 6, 2010 | Track and Field
Senior Florida thrower Mariam Kevkhishvili (Tbilisi, Georgia) has been named the Southeastern Conference's Female Field Athlete of the Week for her strong performance at the 66th Pepsi Florida Relays this past weekend, the league offices in Birmingham, Ala., announced Tuesday afternoon.
Kevkhishvili, who is on the watch list for The Bowerman – track and field's highest honor, won the women's shot put at Florida Relays with a nation-leading mark of 17.94m/58-10.25. She finished as the top collegian in the women's shot put at the Pepsi Florida Relays for the fourth consecutive year.
Kevkhishvili leads the conference and the nation in the women's shot put so far this season, accomplishing that mark in her first outdoor competition of 2010. Her throw at the Pepsi Florida Relays is more than three feet better than the season-best mark of the second-place person on the 2010 NCAA leaders list.
Kevkhishvili and the Gators have a week off from competition before returning to action April 17 when they play host to the Tom Jones Memorial Classic at James G. Pressly Stadium at Percy Beard Track.
