Troy vs. Auburn (NCAA First Round)
Auburn Men's Tennis Defeats Troy in NCAA First-Round Matchup
Saturday, May 15, 2010 | Men's Tennis
In first-round NCAA Men's Tennis Tournament action on Saturday, Auburn downed Troy, 4-0, at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex.
Auburn (12-12) took the doubles points with an 8-2 win on court one followed by the 8-5 clincher on court three. Auburn then received three straight-sets singles wins from Alex Stamchev (court three), Andy Mies (court six) and the clincher from Tim Hewitt (court two) to close out the match.
“Anytime you have two and a half weeks to three weeks,” said Auburn head coach Eric Shore. “We work hard at practice but that's not a match situation so as a coach, I always wonder how the team will be. I thought we got off to a solid start in doubles and we carried that over into singles. We got the job done but we are going to have to come out better tomorrow and we know that.”
“We didn't play with the confidence that got us here and Auburn played with a lot of that, said Troy head coach Eric Hayes. “They just got on top of us and rolled us out. We are a young program with our first time here at the tournament. It's just a process with this round being the first step.”
Auburn will play the winner of Saturday's other first-round match between sixth-seeded Florida and South Carolina State on Sunday at 2 p.m.
