Incoming University of Florida freshman Kasey Fagan (Dunnellon, Fla.), who will begin her softball career as a Gator in the fall of 2010, was named Gatorade National Player of the Year on Wednesday evening.
Fagan led Dunnellon to two straight Class 4A Florida state softball titles over the past two season, earning Florida Gatorade Player of the Year honors in the process. In her senior season, she tallied a 26-1 record in the circle with a 0.57 ERA and 239 strikeouts. The righty pitched three no-hitters and allowed only 56 hits over 127 innings. At the plate, Fagan put together a .574 batting average while belting eight home runs, 13 doubles and driving in 61 runs. She scored 53 of her own and recorded a .989 slugging percentage.
The incoming Gator is the second Marion County athlete to earn the national honor as current UF quarterback John Brantley, who attended Trinity Catholic High, won the award in 2007. Fagan is now a finalist for the Gatorade Female High School Athlete of the Year award, which will be presented at the ESPY Awards in California in July.
Last season, Fagan was named an ESPN Rise All-American and earned the Florida Dairy Farmers Player of the Year award and Class 4A Tournament MVP honors. She is one of five incoming players who will join the UF softball team, which will be coming off its third straight trip to the Women's College World Series.
