Thursday, June 3, 2010 | Track and Field
Senior Florida javelin thrower Evelien Dekkers (Etten-Leur, Netherlands) has been named a CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team selection for the second consecutive season, the organization announced Thursday afternoon.
Dekkers was named to the Academic All-District III first team and, by virtue of being a first-team all-district selection, Dekkers becomes eligible for consideration for Academic All-America status.
Dekkers holds a 3.84 grade point average, majoring in food science and human nutrition. She also is minoring in business administration. She has qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships by placing first at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds last weekend in Greensboro, N.C.
Dekkers, who ranks second all-time in school history in the women's javelin with a career-best toss of 53.16m/174-5, holds a season-best throw of 52.12m/171-0. She is a three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
Florida is a member of CoSIDA District 3, which encompasses the states of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
Dekkers and the Florida track and field teams are back in action June 9-12, when they travel to Eugene, Ore., to participate in the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
