
Van Overbeek Advances to Semis at Kalamazoo

Bob Van Overbeek (Boca Raton, Fla.) posted a victory in the quarterfinals of the USTA boys national championships in Kalamazoo, Mich., on Friday, defeating Clay Thompson 6-2, 7-6(6) to advance to Saturday's 18s semifinal.
Van Overbeek, the ninth seed in Kalamazoo who earned SEC All-Freshman honors this past spring at UF, will next face the tournament's No. 2-seeded Denis Kudla of Arlington, Va., at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Sekou Bangoura Jr. (Bradenton, Fla.), another SEC All-Freshman performer at Florida this spring, has advanced into the doubles final and will compete for that title on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
The tournament winner in singles and doubles receives a bid into the main draw at the U.S. Open, which kicks off on August 30.

At last year's event, Van Overbeek reached the quarterfinals of the singles draw while Bangoura was a runner up in the doubles event.
