Wednesday, August 18, 2010 | Volleyball
The Florida volleyball team was picked to finish second in the Southeastern Conference in 2010, according to a preseason vote by the league's 11 coaches, it was announced on Wednesday.
Tennessee was picked to win the 2010 SEC volleyball title, earning nine first-place votes. The Gators were the only other team to receive first-place votes, garnering two nods for the overall champion.
Points were compiled on a 1-2-3-4-5-6 basis for the Western Division and 1-2-3-4-5 for the Eastern Division. Each coach is not allowed to vote for his or her own team and each coach also voted for one team as an overall conference champion.
Florida, 18-time winners of the Southeastern Conference from 1991-2008, are coming off a 25-6 season in 2009 to extend the nation's longest streak of consecutive 25-win seasons to 19. The Gators also advanced to their 18th NCAA regional semifinals in the last 19 years in 2009.
The Gators begin their 2010 campaign Aug. 28-29, when they travel to Omaha, Neb., to participate in the prestigious AVCA Showcase, where they will face Big 12 Conference foes Iowa State and Nebraska.
