Gators in the U.S. Open Update
Friday, August 27, 2010 | Men's Tennis
The U.S. Open singles draws were announced on Thursday, and former Gator Ryan Sweeting has an idea of the path ahead when the Grand Slam event begins in New York on Monday, Aug. 30, drawing a qualifier for his first-round match.
Sweeting, appearing in his fifth consecutive U.S. Open, is looking for his first win in the tournament since 2006. A first-round win for Sweeting would likely lead to a matchup with 13th-seed Jurgen Melzer of Austria.
Another former Florida player, 2007 All-American Jesse Levine, fell in the qualifying round on Thursday. Levine was forced to retire, trailing Brazil's Caio Zampieri 6-4, 2-0.
Rising sophomore Sekou Bangoura Jr. (Bradenton, Fla.) still awaits the doubles draw, which will be revealed next week. Bangoura will team with Nathan Pasha in the main draw following the pair's win at the USTA Boys National Tennis Championships in Kalamazoo earlier this month.
