Sophomore Sarra Lajnef (Tunis, Tunisia) took home eight medals this past week at the 10th Senior African Swimming Championships in Casablanca, Morocco. The largest swimming event in Africa this year took place at the Mohamed V Sports Complex and was sanctioned by the Confederation of African Nations (CANA).
Lajnef, who swam three top-10 times in school history as a freshman in 2009-10, set the meet record in the 200-meter breaststroke with a gold medal-winning time of 2:32.16. The sophomore followed that effort by winning silver medals in the 50 breast (33.67), 100 breast (1:12.05), 200-meter individual medley (2:20.23) and 400 IM (4:52.53). Lajnef set Tunisian records with her time in the 400 IM, along with her bronze medal-winning time in the 200-meter backstroke (2:25.04).
As a member of the Tunisian relay team, Lajnef helped her native country place second on the medal stand in the 800-meter freestyle relay (8:31.71), while earning a bronze medal in the 400 free relay (3:59.02).
Lajnef's eight medals during the meet accounted for almost half of Tunisia's total (18), while finishing second behind Morocco's Sara El Bekri in total points on the women's side. Tunisia finished the competition ranked second in the overall medal count behind South Africa's 59 medals.
