Gators Participate in 2010 SEC Together We CAN Food Drive
Wednesday, September 22, 2010 | General
The University of Florida Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is encouraging Gator fans to help fill a Gainesville area food bank, Bread of the Mighty Food Bank, as part of the Southeastern Conference's “Together We CAN” food drive that spans from Sept. 17–26.
In conjunction with the other 11 SEC institutions, Florida's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will be collecting canned goods and other non-perishable food items before the football game against Kentucky on Saturday, Sept. 25 at the Verizon Gator FanFest, outside Gate 2 of the Stephen C. O'Connell Center. Other drop-off locations in Gainesville include The Swamp and Pita Pit on University Avenue and Ballyhoo and Gators Dockside on Newberry Road.
In addition to the canned goods collection prior to the Kentucky game, fans will be able to donate cans at another Gator athletic event in the 10-day span, which is Florida's volleyball match versus Ole Miss at 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 26 at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center.
The Gators have already collected 124 pounds of food and would like to continue to increase that number. Florida will continue its own canned food drive after the “SEC Together We CAN” drive, collecting food at two more home football games. Look for drop off locations on October 9 (Florida Gators vs. LSU Tigers) and November 20 (Florida Gators vs. Appalachian State Mountaineers) at Verizon FanFest outside Gate Two of the O'Connell Center. FanFest opens three hours prior to kick-off.
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committees from each of the 12 SEC institutions are taking part in the "Together We CAN" drive and the items that each school collects will go to a food bank in each University's respective area. Each league institution will report the total amount of food and donations they collect and the SEC office will announce the league total. The “SEC Together We CAN” drive is not a competition between the schools, but a chance for all the schools in the conference to work together to help people in need. Last year, the “Together We CAN Drive” raised over 42,500 pounds of food and donations.
