Men's Tennis Prepares For Busy Weekend

The University of Florida men's tennis team will have players competing in two different individual tournaments this weekend. Four Gators will participate in the round-robin Napa Valley Classic, which will take place at Meadowood Napa Valley in St. Helena, Calif., Sept. 24-26. Three other UF players will compete in the 43rd annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships, hosted by the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga., Sept. 24-27.
The Napa Valley Classic will feature four players each from six different teams, including Florida, California-Berkeley, Illinois, Kentucky, Southern California and Texas. UF will be represented by sophomore Sekou Bangoura Jr. (Bradenton, Fla.), senior Alexandre Lacroix (Paris, France), junior Nassim Slilam (Paris, France) and sophomore Bob van Overbeek (Boca Raton, Fla.).
Each player will compete in pool play, with the top performers competing in a single-elimination, 10-point tiebreak tournament at the end of the final day to determine a champion.
The Southern Intercollegiate Championships has participants from 34 schools throughout the Southeast, including seven SEC schools. Competing for Florida will be freshmen Michael Alford (Tampa, Fla.) and Andrew Butz (Vero Beach, Fla.), along with sophomore Billy Federhofer (North Miami, Fla.).
The field of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships, which is the oldest fall college tennis tournament in the United States, will be divided into three singles divisions and two doubles divisions with a champion from each division. All three Gator players will be participating in the top singles division, while Alford and Butz will compete in the top doubles division.
A maximum of two singles consolation rounds will be played by those losing in the first round, while the doubles divisions will have no consolation matches.
