Three Florida Golfers to Compete in New Years Invitational

Florida golfers Bank Vongvanij (Bradenton, Fla.), Michael Furci (Sayville, N.Y.) and Santiago Gavino (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) will compete in the New Years Invitational in at the St. Petersburg Country Club on Thurs., Jan. 6.
The invitational has been held every year since 1927. It is the oldest continuously-running invitational tournament in the Southeast and one of the oldest in the country. Florida Head Coach Buddy Alexander holds the record for the most wins of any player in the invitational since the World War II era with six titles. Alexander's father, Skip Alexander, was a long-time pro at the St. Petersburg Country Club.
“This is a special tournament for me,” said Alexander. “I grew up on the eighth tee from the time I was five years old and my dad was a pro there for 35 years. I always enjoyed playing there and there have some notable names through the years.”
Entrants from around the U.S. as well as Canada, Germany, Finland, the UK, Colombia, Japan and China will compete.
