Matt Elliott (Peoria, Ill.) has been named the SEC Male Freshman of the Week for his performance at the All-Florida Invitational, announced by the league Tuesday. The honor marks Florida's first SEC weekly honor of the 2011 season, and the first recognition of Elliott's young career.
Elliott led the Gators to a first place finish at the All-Florida Invitational with a team-high six first-place finishes, including three individual and three relay victories. The Peoria, Ill. native swept the breast events, completing the 100 in 55.64 and 200 in 1:59.06. The Gator newcomer also took the 400 IM title, touching the wall in a NCAA “B” cut 3:50.96.
The freshman helped lead his 200- and 400-yard medley relay teams to finish atop the standings by swimming the second leg in each event. Additionally, Elliott anchored the Gators' 400-yard freestyle team, which finished first to conclude the weekend's events.
Elliott and the rest of the Gators will take to the pool again this Saturday, Oct. 15, as Florida opens conference competition and takes on the Tigers of LSU. Meet time is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET and will be aired by Sun Sports at a later date. For the latest in Florida swimming and diving, fans are encouraged to follow the program on Twitter and Facebook.
