Newman and Slilam Advance to Quarterfinals of USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships

Sophomore Spencer Newman (Miami, Fla.) and senior Nassim Slilam (Paris, France) each advanced to the Quarterfinals of the 2011 USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships, hosted by the University of Georgia at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens. In doubles, two Gator duos advanced to the Semifinals of the tournament.
Slilam, the No. 3 overall seed in the tournament, won two matches in straight sets on Saturday. He breezed past FSU's Blake Davis, 6-0, 6-1, in the Round of 32 and took down C. Salif Kante from FAMU, 6-3, 7-5, in the Round of 16. Slilam will face No. 6 seed Kevin King from Georgia Tech in the Quarterfinals on Sunday.
Newman, unseeded entering the event, pulled off the upset of the tournament to this point on Saturday afternoon. After beating FAU's Will Neuner, 6-4, 6-4, he easily handled Georgia Tech's Juan Spir, the tournament's No. 2 seed, winning 6-2, 6-2. Newman will play Georgia's Hernus Pieters in the Quarterfinals on Sunday morning.
Juniors Billy Federhofer (North Miami, Fla.) and Bob van Overbeek (Boca Raton, Fla.) advanced to the Round of 16 on Saturday before being knocked out of the tournament. Federhofer beat Georgia Tech's Dusan Miljevic, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (4) before falling to No. 1 seed Sadio Doumbia from Georgia, 6-2, 6-2. van Overbeek took down Matthijs Verdam from Georgia Southern, 6-7 (6), 6-3, 6-2 but lost to Georgia's Ignacio Taboada in a tight match in the Round of 16, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5).
On the doubles side, two Florida pairs will play in the Semifinals tomorrow. Slilam and Federhofer, the No. 1-seeded doubles team in the event, pulled out a win over Florida State's Blake Davis and Jordan Kelly-Houston, 8-6, in the Quarterfinals. The UF duo will face Georgia's No. 3-seeded Campbell Johnson and Will Reynolds on Sunday with a chance to advance to the event Finals.
On the other side of the bracket, the No. 6-seeded pair of Butz and van Overbeek beat FSU's Sadio Doumbia and Nathan Pasha, the No. 4 seeded tandem, 8-5. The Gator duo will play Georgia's Wil Spencer and Garrett Brasseaux on Sunday in the Semifinals.
In consolation singles on Saturday, sophomore Andrew Butz (Vero Beach, Fla.) earned three wins and junior Frank Carleton (Naples, Fla.) had one victory. Butz won 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (11-9) over Georgia Tech's Eduardo Segura, 6-3, 6-4 over Miami's Victor Mauz and earned a victory when Stetson's Maksim Levanovich withdrew.
Carleton defeated FSU's Brian Alden, 6-0, 6-1, before withdrawing against FGCU's Matt Rock.

The winner of both the singles and doubles draws will advance to play in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships, held at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., November 3-6.
