Thursday, November 10, 2011 | Women's Swimming & Diving
Led by 2012 U.S. Olympic Head Coach and 2011 American Swimming Coaches Association of the Year Gregg Troy, the University of Florida men's and women's swimming and diving programs each ranked in the top-10 nationally in the first poll of the 2011-12 season, released Wednesday by the College Swimming Coaches' Association of America (CSCAA). The women settle in the top-five group, ranking fourth for the second consecutive year, while the men rank seventh.
“The women have competed very well. We have a very strong dual meet team and the men keep on getting better with each and every week,” remarked Troy. “It is a good indication of how we've swam thus far throughout the fall.”
The Florida men remain undefeated on the season with a 2-0-1 (1-0-1 SEC) record, tying No. 9 Georgia in a nail-biting meet that ended with each squad reaching 150 points. The Gators have had a short fall season to date, with three meets on the year, but have swam consistently well in the short amount of time they find themselves racing against the clock. They opened the season with a win at the second consecutive All-Florida Invitational, finishing ahead of five other schools, including No. 23 Florida State. A week later, The Gators bested SEC opponent LSU, 185-115 in their conference debut. The last time Florida took to the pool was against in-state rival Florida State to secure its second victory on the year with 175 points to FSU's 121.
The women's squad has had an impressive start to the year with a 5-1 (2-1 SEC) record after going against nine of the top-25 teams, including top-ranked squads No. 1 Georgia and No. 3 Texas. Their lone loss in dual competition was to the Bulldogs in the first long course meet of the season, while the Gators also fell to No. 3 Texas at the Dallas Classic 330-350 in a meet that featured five teams in the latest CSCAA poll. Florida has captured victories over No. 7 Stanford, No. 16 Michigan, No. 20 LSU and No. 24 FSU in dual competition, while finishing ahead of No. 17 Louisville, No. 18 Virginia and No. 20. Southern Methodist at annual invitational meets.
The women's squad also led all Division I teams in the latest Avidasports Swim Rankings, with their win over Florida State earning 11.0 Avidasports Points. The points indicate that on average, the Gators' swims ranked among the top 11.0% of all best times nationally.
The Avida Performance Index is a ranking of average percentile for each team's individual swims. Rankings are taken from Hy-Tek files, and then percentile and improvement indicators are averaged for teams swimming in multiples meets. Those times are then compared to collegeswimming.com's database of best times achieved by collegiate swimmers over the past three years. Teams must have a minimum of eighteen individual swims to qualify for each week's rankings with a share of the lowest-ranked swims omitted based on the number of swims.
