Gators in First Place After Day One of JU Invitational

Senior Bank Vongvanij (Bradenton, Fla.) led the Florida Men's Golf team to a first-place finish after the second round of the JU Invitational on Monday at the TPC Stadium Course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. The Gators finished with a score of 569 and shot seven under par, 17 strokes ahead of runner-up North Florida.
“Today we had ideal scoring conditions,” said head coach Buddy Alexander. “There wasn't much wind and it wasn't too cold, so the scoring was very good. We hit a lot of birdies today which was key and I think that will be important for our momentum heading into tomorrow.”
Vongvanij finished the day in first place after making six under par for a score of 138, three strokes ahead of second-place finisher Evan Beck. He made nine birdies on the day with four coming in the first round and five in the second.
“I am really proud of Bank,” said Alexander. “His scoring was very good and he is continuing to do what he did in the fall.”
Redshirt senior Andres Echavarria (Medellin, Colombia) and sophomore Phillip Choi (Orlando, Fla.) did not finish far behind with their scores of 143. Choi started the day well, making four birdies in round one and three birdies, a bogey and double bogey in round two. Echavarria made two birdies and three bogeys in the first round for a score of 73, but went on to have five birdies and three bogeys in the second round to shoot two under par.
In his return to his home course, sophomore Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) finished tied for eighth with his score of 145. He made six birdies, five bogeys and one double bogey in the first round and followed it with three birdies and three bogeys in the second round.
Sophomore Tommy Mou (Bradenton, Fla.) shot five birdies, six bogeys and three double bogeys to finish the second round tied for 29th.
The Gators will be back in action for the third round and final day of the JU Invitational on Tuesday, Feb. 1. Players are set to tee off at 8:40 a.m. Check www.GatorZone.com for updated news and results and Golfstat.com for live scoring.
