It is the second consecutive week that Florida faces a top-six nationally ranked program. Last Friday, the Gators used the nation's highest total of the season (197.55) to claim a victory against then-No. 6 Alabama. Florida swept first place for all five events.
Freshman Mackenzie Caquatto made her collegiate all-around debut last Friday, posting the highest total ever by a Gator in her premiere all-around performance (39.575). Caquatto also captured her first balance beam (9.925) and uneven bars (9.90) wins. She was named this week's Southeastern Conference Freshman Gymnast of the Week.
Senior All-American Maranda Smith's first place vault finish (9.95) propelled UF to its sixth-best vault total in program history (49.475). Smith also posted a 9.925 for third place on the floor exercise. She finished just behind sophomore teammates Ashan?e Dickerson (9.95) and Marissa King (9.975). King's 9.975 was her second floor win of the season and stands as the nation's best floor mark of 2011. The Gators equaled their school record of 49.65 with its event total on floor.
This is only the second time that UF has been ranked No. 1 when heading into a dual meet in Athens. The first was in 2007, when the Gators and the GymDogs registered their only tie in the 125 all-time meetings. Georgia leads UF 91-33-1 in the series, and 14-5-1 in dual meet action in the Stegeman Coliseum.
This will be Georgia's first meet at home after two consecutive road meets. Last week, the GymDogs lost to the then No. 11 Arkansas GymBacks 195.775-195.40. Georgia's top two totals of 2011 both came at home. At No. 2 in the nation on the balance beam, the GymDogs are ranked one spot ahead of Florida. Georgia is led by Gina Nuccio, ranked third nationally on bars, Shayla Worley, fourth on beam and freshman Lindsey Cheek, who is ranked first on bars and posted a 39.55 in her only all-around performance against Auburn.
