Gators Win Five SEC Titles and Break Two SEC & School Records on Day Three of SEC Championships

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Florida men's and women's swimming teams combined to capture five Southeastern Conference championships Friday on the third night of the SEC Championships at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center. In addition, Florida broke the men's and women's SEC and UF 400-yard individual medley records.
“The 400-yard IM was key for us,” head coach Gregg Troy said. “We had several premier performances tonight and raced extremely well.”
In the finals of the men's and women's 400 IM to start the evening, senior Conor Dwyer (Winnetka, Ill.) and freshman Elizabeth Beisel (North Kingstown, R.I.) broke the pool, school and SEC records with NCAA automatic qualifying times of 3:37.75 and 4:00.35, respectively. Dwyer's mark ranks third in American history behind American record holder Tyler Clary (3:35.98 on March 26, 2009) and Olympic legend Michael Phelps (3:36.26 on March 2, 2006), while Beisel's time currently ranks second in the nation.
Also picking up an automatic NCAA time in the women's 400 IM was junior Teresa Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa.), who won a bronze medal in the event with a time of 4:07.25.
The next event after the women's 400 IM was the men's 100-yard butterfly, where Marcin Cieslak (Warsaw, Poland) won the event with a pool-record mark. The freshman's gold-medal winning time of 46.03 is the second-fastest time in the country this season and ranks third in school history.
Following Cieslak's dominance in the 100 fly, Florida's next medal came in the men's 100-yard backstroke, where redshirt sophomore Marco Loughran (London, England) took home gold with a NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 45.70.
In the last men's event of the evening, Loughran partnered with Dwyer, Cieslak and senior Brett Fraser (George Town, Cayman Islands) in capturing the men's 400-yard medley relay title with an automatic qualifying time of 3:04.99. The second-fastest time in school history was aided by Loughran's 45.61 backstroke split, which ranks second all-time at UF behind Gator great Ryan Lochte (44.60). The personal-best time is also the top time in the NCAA this year in the event.
Picking up his own NCAA automatic qualifying time was Fraser, who took silver on the medal stand after clocking in at 1:32.60 in the men's 200-yard freestyle.
Other Gators picking up medals included senior captain Michael Joyce (Voorhees, N.J.) with a bronze in the men's 400 IM (personal-best 3:44.07) and sophomore Sebastien Rousseau (Cape Town, South Africa) with a bronze in the men's 200 free (personal-best 1:33.87).
