Men's Tennis Drops 4-3 Decision To UCLA To Conclude ITA Indoors

Florida men's tennis concluded competition at the ITA Men's National Team Indoor Championship with a 4-3 loss to sixth-seed UCLA in a consolation match on Sunday at the Seattle Tennis Club.
“UCLA was better than we were today, but not by a lot,” head coach Andy Jackson said. “We don't have any complaints in terms of the competitiveness and the effort we gave. We're just going to work on improving some of the tennis parts and move on to the SEC season.”
For the second straight day, the Gators (7-3) found themselves at an early disadvantage after dropping the doubles point with losses on courts one and three.
The Bruins pushed their edge to 2-0 with a court five win by Adrien Puget over Spencer Newman (Miami, Fla.), but the Gators responded with a pair of straight-sets victories from Nassim Slilam (Paris, France) on court three and Sekou Bangoura Jr. (Bradenton, Fla.) on court two.
UCLA again moved in front as Daniel Kosakowski topped Alexandre Lacroix (Paris, France) at the No. 1 position, 6-3, 6-4, to take a 3-2 lead. UF again replied, as Billy Federhofer (North Miami, Fla.) downed Warren Hardie in straight sets, including a 12-10 tiebreaker to wrap up the second set, to even the count at 3-3.
The outcome then rested on the court four three-setter between Bob van Overbeek (Boca Raton, Fla.) and UCLA's Clay Thompson. After dropping the first set, van Overbeek rebounded to force the deciding third. Thompson took a two-break lead at 5-2, but van Overbeek broke back and held serve to get to 5-4. Needing another break to extend the match, van Overbeek pushed the game to deuce and saved two match points before finally succumbing on the third match point.
The Gators have now played to a 4-3 final score in four of their last five matches, going 2-2 in those meetings. They have a 12-day layoff before welcoming LSU to Gainesville for the SEC opener on March 4 at 3 p.m.
