The University of Florida track and field teams embark on Blacksburg, Va., this weekend to participate in the two-day Virginia Tech Elite Meet at Rector Field House. It will mark the second of three consecutive weekends that the Gators are competing.
The event begins at 5 p.m. ET Friday and continues at 11 a.m. ET Saturday. Live results will be available at http://www.flashresults.com/2011_Meets/indoor/02-04-VT_Elite. Florida will also send a women's distance medley relay team to the New Balance Collegiate Invitational in New York, N.Y., to compete at 6 p.m. ET Friday. That quartet will consist of Genevieve LaCaze (Queensland, Australia), Ebony Eutsey (Miami, Fla.), Shelby Hayes (Winter Park, Fla.) and Cory McGee (Pass Christian, Miss.).
“In terms of this weekend, we're very excited,” Florida head coach Mike Holloway said. “It's going to be another great competition. There are a lot of great teams there and it's also a good facility. We're also sending a group of young ladies to New York this weekend to run a DMR in an effort to get that relay qualified for the national meet as well.
“The big thing about this weekend is that we have to go in again, put our best foot forward and really turn up our focus and our effort. We can't be satisfied with what we've done in the past; we have to understand that our goal, as always, is to be ready in four weeks at the conference meet and in six weeks at the national meet.”
Junior jumper Christian Taylor (Fayetteville, Ga.), who holds the nation's longest consecutive streak of indoor triple jump victories at five, will compete in his first triple jump competition of the 2011 season this weekend. He has not lost an indoor triple jump competition since placing fifth at the 2009 Tyson Invitational. The men's triple jump is slated to commence at 12 p.m. ET Saturday.
Sophomore sprinter Jeff Demps (Winter Park, Fla.), who was the 2010 NCAA 60-meter Champion, will open his 2011 season on Friday at 6:20 p.m. ET, participating in the preliminaries of the men's 60-meter dash. Demps is a three-time individual NCAA Champion after also claiming the men's 100m and 4x100m titles outdoors a year ago.
Sophomore sprinter Tony McQuay (Riviera Beach, Fla.), who was an All-American last season indoors both in the 200m and 400m, will compete for the first time in 2011, after a third-place finish in the 400m at the NCAA Indoor Championships a year ago as a freshman.
Junior sprinter Alishea Usery (St. Louis, Mo.), a 2010 All-American in the 60m, will open up competition in both the 60m and the 200m this weekend. Usery ranks second all-time in UF school history in the 60m with a best time of 7.29 and is ninth in program history in the 200m with a best time of 23.62.
