Tuesday, March 8, 2011 | Women's Tennis
The University of Florida's Alex Cercone (Seminole, Fla.) was named the Southeastern Conference Women's Tennis Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
The Gator rookie played a career-high No. 1 in doubles and a career-high No. 4 in the singles lineup, yet won all five matches last week.
On the doubles court, Cercone paired for the first time ever with sophomore Allie Will (Boca Raton, Fla.) atop the lineup and the tandem collected two impressive wins, including the 8-5 upset victory against Arkansas' No. 34-ranked Tigu and Paulson.
Her hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 win against Claudine Paulson was the clinching dual match victory against Arkansas.
The 6-2, 6-3 win against Florida State's Ruth Seaborne was her 20th win this season.
The top-ranked Gators (13-1, 2-0 SEC) continue action on Friday, when the team welcomes Alabama to Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex, with first-serve set for 5 p.m.
