Butz Named SEC Freshman Of The Week
Tuesday, March 8, 2011 | Men's Tennis
The University of Florida's Andrew Butz (Vero Beach, Fla.) has been named the Southeastern Conference's Freshman of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Butz gained the honor after helping Florida open its SEC slate with a pair of home victories against LSU and Arkansas last weekend. It marks the second such accolade for Butz this spring, as he also earned the recognition on Jan. 26 after the first weekend of the team season.
Playing as doubles partners for the first time, Butz and Bob van Overbeek (Boca Raton, Fla.) provided UF with a pair of strong victories from the No. 2 position, clinching the doubles point against LSU and getting off the court first against Arkansas.
Butz also showed tremendous poise in a pair of tight singles matches, going 3-0 in tiebreakers, including a super-breaker win that clinched his match over LSU's Sebastian Carlsson. Butz also scored a dominant 7-1 tiebreaker to close out Manfred Jeske of Arkansas in straight sets and preserve UF's sweep of the Razorbacks. Butz now stands at 4-2 in dual singles this spring.
The Gators next go on the road to face Alabama on Friday and Auburn on Sunday.
