Claye Named Track and Field News Indoor College Athlete of the Year
Monday, April 25, 2011 | Track and Field
Junior Florida jumper Will Claye (Phoenix, Ariz.) has been named the Collegiate Men's Indoor Athlete of the Year, as selected by Track and Field News in its May 2011 edition, which is on newsstands now. Junior sprinter Jeff Demps (Winter Garden, Fla.) was named one of two honorable mention selections for that honor, along with Clemson heptathlete Miller Moss.
Claye scored 18 of Florida's 52 total points at the 2011 NCAA Indoor Championships, helping the Gators to their second consecutive NCAA Indoor crown, becoming just the fourth different team in NCAA history to win back-to-back men's national indoor titles.
Claye was the NCAA Indoor Champion in the men's triple jump, setting a new NCAA meet record with a winning leap of 17.32m/56-10. He directed a 22-point scoring spree by the Gators in the men's triple jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships to secure the team title. Claye also was the NCAA runner-up in the men's long jump at that meet with a personal-best mark of 8.04m/26-4.50 on his second attempt.
